Luka is a sweet boy looking for his forever home to play with him and give him treats!

Foster Home Feedback

11/13/21: Luka started out really timid and would just lay around mostly for the first couple of days.  Each day he makes strides and is becoming more comfortable every day.   He really is a sweet dog and likes to be by a person’s side all of the time.  I work at home, so Luka likes to spend a lot of time being right beside me.  The last couple of days he has been enjoying laying in the kennel (which is set up beside me) while I work.  We have left him a few times and shut the crate door and he hasn’t whimpered or barked so I don’t think any concerns with that.

One obstacle is he is still really spooked by everything outside (the wind blowing, any cars going by, lawn mowers starting, etc) so that will usually make him run to the door or sit down.  There are some dogs behind a fence in the house beside us and he gets really spooked when they bark. Each day Luka seems to tolerate it more and gets a little more curious. He seems like he looks forward to being outside a little more now and will show signs of playfulness when we are out, letting his guard down a little from the normal noises. He gets along with our cat just fine.  Luka doesn’t really chase the cat. He is just sometimes curious what the cat is up to and will follow it a little.

Eating – Luka eats and drinks really well and has from day one. He isn’t one to eat all of the food in one sitting and will come back to it throughout the day. he is not all that motivated by treats, so we have tried a few different kinds to find one he likes (to help with the potty training rewards). Luka likes to chew on a bone, usually a couple of times a day.  It seems like his most playful/chewing time is in the evening around 7 PM.

Potty training has been the biggest challenge. I think it starts because he gets scared to go outside but the other part is just continuing to work with him. Each day we are making strides there too and can get him to go outside about half of the time now. Not sure if he was trained to go on pee pads but when we had those around it was a bigger challenge. I don’t have those down except for at night now and it seems to be a little better although still is a really slow process when he goes outside. I think that another dog that is trained would be helpful for him to follow. We don’t have a fenced-in yard but I sometimes wonder if that would help (but I also think he would be too scared to be out there on his own anyway at this point).

Luka sleeps on the floor in our bedroom.  For the most part, he just lays there all night quietly.  We are seeing a little bit more puppy coming out of him so he has dragged a couple of things around to chew on (hid my shoe under his bed, pulled my purse out of the corner to chew on). He might have to start sleeping in the crate if he gets too mischievous at night.

He looks forward to when my son comes home, and they sit together a lot.  Luka hasn’t been around any younger kids so not sure how scared he would be with that activity.

Luka really is a great dog with a funny personality and it is awesome to watch him grow each day.  He will make some person/family a really wonderful dog.
