Foster Home Feedback
3/4/2023 Foster Feedback: Hemi has had a difficult start in life. He was found, as a stray, with two other dogs next to a 4th dog--their friend--who had been hit by a car and died. He came into my home on February 19th, Daytona 500 Sunday, hence his name, where he continues to grow and make huge strides every day.
When he first came into my home, this poor boy had no idea what a home life consisted of, like how to act in a home and be a puppy. Through my two fur boys (and treats), Hemi has learned how to play with other dogs, enjoy toys, and make considerable strides in potty training.
Hemi is not entirely potty trained, but who can blame him for not wanting to go outside to do business when it is cold and in a blizzard? He continues to work hard on potty training and uses potty pads with almost near precision. Sometimes he will give cues on when he needs to go outside by whining and running to the door, sometimes, the signals are subtle, and you will only know after he has done his business and was trying to tell you he needs to go out.
This boy loves his food and treats and will do just about anything for something to eat; therefore, he should be easy to train. After about five minutes in our home, he figured out where the treats were and how to get into them, so they were moved into containers with lids. He loves his food so much that he swallows it whole and in big gulps, so for a short period, I used a slow feeder/puzzle dish, which slowed him down a little. He is now fed using a rubber treat ball or a kong, so he has to work for his food, slowing him down to a more normal pace.
Because of space issues in our home, right now, we are not using a kennel for him. Occasionally, he will be left home alone with my two fur boys, and other than shredding a potty pad or two, he has been fine to go unkenneled.
He gets along great with other dogs and everyone that has met him. People who meet him fall in love with his squishy face and his love for humans. This little guy loves attention and will whine when he can't be beside you. He likes to snuggle briefly at night, then spend the rest sleeping in front of the patio door, guarding the backyard. I have two grumpy fur boys who like to be left alone, and he has managed to worm his way into making them both play with him. Making friends with these two major grumps is challenging, so kudos to Hemi! He has a unique talent; at night, when you are sleeping, he likes to wake me up by squeaking the squeaky toys until I get out of bed to let him outside to eat snow and dig out buried toys.
If you are looking for a cuddle buddy to keep you warm or a tv buddy, Hemi is your perfect match. He would love to curl up next to you and eat popcorn while watching a movie.
