09 Jul Happy Tail for Morty (FKA Wayne)
A little backstory: our first dachshund came to live with us in 2005 and it was love at first sight. The personality and charm they bring is beyond words. From 2005 until July 2021, we had 3 female mini dachshunds. In 2021, we lost our last dachshund and even though we loved them dearly, we wanted more of a medium dog. 4 Luv of Dog Rescue came to our rescue when they introduced us to Chloe, a 5 month old lab mix.
Chloe might have been a little more than medium when she grew to be a 70-pound lab/pit mix, but she is the best dog. Around April/May of 2024, we decided that it was time to get Chloe a sister and it was also time to get another dachshund which is around the same time we first saw Wayne. Since we had only had females, we drug our feet and by the time we decided to act, Wayne was pending adoption.
We kept our eyes out for a dachshund for the next few months, but none came in. By March of 2025, we decided that maybe a dachshund wasn’t going to happen so we applied to meet a pretty pit mix girl. Unfortunately, after we met her, she just wasn’t the girl for us.
A few weeks later, we were informed that Wayne, now Morty, had made his way back to the rescue and if we were still interested, we could meet him that week. It took about 10 minutes for us to realize that he was the boy that we needed to add to our home! We couldn’t finalize the adoption that night because of schedule issues so we came back to pick him up 2 nights later. We had about a 20-minute drive to get home, and he was snoozing within about the first 5 minutes looking completely at home.
Morty walked through our front door like he’s lived here his entire life and helped himself to the box of toys and bones. Chloe instantly turned into the perfect big sister sharing her life with him teaching him the ropes and playing chase in the back yard and a gentle game of tug of war. Even though she’s bigger, she runs slower so he can keep up and doesn’t drag him around during tug games.
Morty’s first weekend with us was spent in Detroit Lakes troll hunting, visiting Three Dog Bakery, Harley-Davidson of Fargo, and Scheels. All of which he quickly realized were his favorites. He has spent time on the road camping and traveling to Colorado to visit Bucees and In and Out (well, maybe that was for me) and has enjoyed every minute of life with us.
We know that he took the long way to get home, and had a couple of detours, but he is where he belongs, and we are all so happy he made it!
